Abstract
Hereditary spherocytosis is one of the common inherited disorders of the red cell
membrane, characterized by osmotically fragile spherical red cells that are selectively
trapped by the spleen. Increased autohemolysis with the partial protecting effects of
added glucose is a common finding in hereditary spherocytosis. But in some rare cases,
glucose fails to prevent the increased autohemolysis. We experienced a case of
hereditary spherocytosis in 21-year old female patient whose clinical and laboratory
features showed typical findings of hereditary spherocytosis except autohemolysis test in
which added glucose did not prevent increased autohemolysis, After splenectomy the
symptoms and signs disappeared, the laboratory data improved and the autohemolysis
test showed typical findings of hereditary spherocytosis.
